The morning of Friday, December 9 dawned cold and clear as HC Media and crew descended upon downtown Haverhill for the installation of HC Media’s Christmas Bell, a 7-foot painted aluminum bell suspended over downtown that plays Christmas carols and houses a 24-hour webcam. Now in its second year, the bell is better than ever! For 2016, the bell has returned to its historic location right in the heart of Washington Square, where it hung for over 25 years beginning in 1949.
The Whittier Tech metal fabrication department carefully replicated the 250-lb. bell based on its original design last year. A team of engineers from Spiegel, Zamecnik and Shah designed a massive 24’ high, 44’ wide steel frame on which the bell is mounted. Haverhill’s Brightside and the Parks Department provided and hung the garlands that adorn the frame.
The bell is outfitted with 21st century technology in the form of a live webcam or “Bellcam”, which can be viewed 24/7 on the HC Media website at beta.haverhillcommunitytv.org. Bellcam is also broadcast nightly on Facebook Live from 6-9 pm, accompanied by unique Christmas music and audio broadcasts. If you are in the Washington Square area, you will hear our Christmas Bell Broadcast played directly from the bell, with holiday music playing from 10 am until 8 pm.
The bell will remain in place until early January.
